A paywall is one of those things everyone has an opinion about but few people can explain simply. So here is the simplest way to think about it.

The bouncer analogy

Imagine a club. You want to get in. There is a bouncer at the door who says, "That will be $20 for entry." That is a paywall. In app terms, it is when you block access to features or content and ask the user to pay before they can continue.

Simple enough. But here is where most apps get it wrong.

The difference between blocking and gating

A bad paywall feels like a locked door. You open an app, tap around for five seconds, and suddenly everything is behind a price tag. You have no idea if the app is any good. You do not know what you would be paying for. That is blocking.

A good paywall feels like an upgrade. You have already used the app, seen what it does, maybe even gotten some value out of it. Then it says, "Want more? Here is what the full version looks like." You know exactly what you are buying. That is gating.

The mechanic is the same — you are asking someone to pay. But the user experience is completely different. One feels like extortion. The other feels like a fair trade.

If users hit your paywall and feel annoyed, that is not a pricing problem. It is a positioning problem. Fix what comes before the ask, not the ask itself.
